On the surface, Jim appears to be an average 15-year-old student. He goes to school, stays out of trouble, looks after his mom, and selflessly puts others above himself. But there’s a piece of him that yearns for a life outside the doldrums of suburbia and a life of adventure. When destiny calls and a magical Amulet chooses Jim to be the first human protector of a secret world of Trolls living beneath his hometown, Jim is thrust into the greatest adventure of his life. Whether it’s rogue gnomes, mischievous goblins or trolls of the worst kind, Jim has a lot to learn if he wants to live to see graduation.
There is no one Jim would rather have by his side than his confident best friend, Toby. He offers Jim unwavering loyalty and boundless optimism, as well as the occasional well-timed joke when things get rough. Through all of the ups and downs Jim endures on his journeys, Toby acts as his constant, inspiring Jim when he is dejected and keeping Jim in check when he’s gone off the deep end.
Wise beyond her years and suspicious of Jim’s strange behavior, Claire finally gets her answers when she discovers her baby brother was swapped for a Changeling Troll! She is then introduced to a wondrous world full of Trolls and magic. However, this doesn’t distract her from her quest to save her brother no matter the odds or obstacles, though it helps that Jim is willing to do almost anything for her. She becomes an integral part of the Trollhunting team with her sharp wit and strong loyalty to friends and family.
Grandiose in speech and with never-ending enthusiasm, Blinky is the chief Troll advisor to Jim and his friends. He views himself as a mastermind and diligent trainer, though the rest of Trollkind considers him a crackpot for embracing Jim as the first ever human Trollhunter. Blinky sees potential in Jim even when almost no one else does, and he will do anything to help him succeed.
Upon first glance, AAARRRGGHH!!! appears to be a hulking brute, but in reality, he’s a gentle giant. Once a feared lieutenant for Gunmar’s army, AAARRRGGHH!!! has since renounced his heinous ways and has joined the good Trolls. A reformed fighter, AAARRRGGHH!!! has adopted a zen-like attitude for pacifism, avoiding conflict. As threats grow and stakes rise, will AAARRRGGHH!!! remain a pacifist for long?
As Jim’s high school history teacher, Mr. Strickler is a caring mentor and constant source of guidance. But unbeknownst to Jim, Strickler is a Changeling – one of Gunmar’s Troll spies who can take human form. Charming, manipulative, and literally two-faced, Strickler befriends Jim’s mom and becomes the threat closest to home for Jim and his loved ones.
Impulsive and explosive, Bular is the last of his tribe, hiding in the shadows of the human world. His warlord father Gunmar has been imprisoned within the Darklands for centuries. It kills Bular that he must take orders from Strickler, a lowly Changeling. He wants nothing more than to destroy the Trollhunter and free Gunmar and his army, proving his worth to his estranged father.
A particularly large and vicious Troll, Draal initially resents our hero Jim, believing the sacred mantle of Trollhunter should have been passed to him over a mere human. More than a vengeful brute, Draal wants what’s best for his kin, but his pride prevents him from acknowledging Jim’s true potential.
NotEnrique is the self-serving, foul-mouthed Changeling who takes Baby Enrique’s place. His size and appearance resembles a toddler, even in Troll form. Always out for his own self-interest, he will play both sides against each other for his personal gain and to save his own hide.
Gunmar is the Troll warlord of the Gumm-Gumm army and the father of Bular. He is ruthless beyond imagining, and his return to the natural world would spell the utter destruction of human and Trollkind as we know it.
